Writing a Proposal for the Humanities and Social Sciences

The five to six hour Grant Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences Workshop focuses on how to:

1. Find humanities and social sciences funding agencies/foundations and determine their funding patterns

2. Determine the most appropriate funding source(s) for specific projects

3. Identify and use key components of guidelines

4. Develop

  • goals and objectives
  • a specific plan to achieve goals and objectives
  • an evaluation plan

5. Demonstrate

  • unique position and ability of institution/organization to carry out the project
  • participants’ experience and expertise

6. Use the art and science of proposal writing

Participants will devote at least one-half of workshop time to developing goals and objectives and a general outline for their projects.

Within project grants, there are fellowships, scholarships, research grants, training grants, experimental and demonstration grants, evaluation grants, planning grants, technical assistant grants, and many others. Grant funders include the federal government, state and local governments, private foundations, corporations, and individuals.
