About Dr. DePass
Dr. Anthony DePass is a Professor of Biology at Long Island University, where he serves as PI and Director of the LIU MBRS RISE (NIH), and the LIU ADVANCE (NSF) programs and Co-PI of LIU’s Noyce Teacher Scholarship program. Dr. DePass has nearly 20 years experience in grants and program management, and currently has over $5 million in active grants. He has a lifetime accumulation of nearly $20 million in external funding as PI and Co-PI. These include grants for biomedical research, and the administration of programs aimed at all levels of the development pipeline for scientists.
On the national level, Dr. DePass served as PI of the American Society for Cell Biology’s T36 MARC grant while Chair of that organization’s Minorities Affairs Committee. In those capacities, Dr. DePass led the implementation of several training and career development activities spanning the undergraduate to the professional levels for participants from over 140 institutions. Dr. DePass Co-Chaired an NRC committee (National Academies of Sciences) on Interventions that Encourage Minorities to Pursue Research Careers. The activities associated with that committee’s work has since translated into him leading annual conferences on Interventions that Broaden Participation in Research Careers. This work is currently funded by a T36 MARC grant from the NIH for which Dr. DePass also serves as PI. These conferences serve as venues for the dissemination of scholarship and training related to Interventions research and evaluation. More recently,
Dr. DePass served on a similar committee within the NRC that examined the status of Minority Women in Academia.
Dr. DePass is the lead author on assessment for the recently published Vision and Change in Undergraduate Education- A Call to Action. This work was supported by HHMI, NSF, NIH and AAAS, and represents the culmination of a multi year project involving over 200 faculty administrators and stakeholders nationwide, and addresses the needed improvement of biology education to address 21st century challenges. He is an external evaluator on several funded training programs, and through service on review panels for the NIH, NSF, USDA and other non-federal organizations, he has reviewed numerous grants and served and chaired several site visit teams.
Dr. DePass earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Molecular and Cell Biology as well as Chemistry from the University of Connecticut- Storrs. His Masters and PhD degrees in Molecular and Cellular Biology were earned at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Dr. DePass currently has an active research laboratory at Long Island University–Brooklyn where he is a member of the faculty in the department of Biology. The focus of his research is on cell differentiation as a therapeutic target for cancer. Several undergraduate and masters students who were trained in Dr. DePass’ laboratory have gone on to pursue doctoral study and biomedical related careers in industry and academia.
